Yesterday, we marked 91 years of Social Security standing as a pillar of opportunity and peace of mind for generations of Americans. For nearly a century, this vital lifeline has provided millions of seniors, people with disabilities and families with the economic security they earned through a lifetime of hard work.
For The Children
This week, I had the joy of joining the incredible students and staff at Booker T. Washington Community Service Center's Freedom School for Harambee. Together, we read Equality's Call: The Story of Voting Rights in America and celebrated the power of young people to learn, lead and help shape the future of our Democracy.
Restoring the American Dream
Today, I joined Congressman Mike Thompson, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and Bay Area community partners to celebrate the passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. While no single federal law can solve our nation's housing crisis overnight, this legislation takes an important step toward lowering costs, expanding our housing supply and helping more families find a safe, affordable place to call home.
Resilience of Hope
Last week, I was honored to join advocates, health care providers, researchers and community leaders at the Resilience of Hope Symposium in San Francisco. Together, we reflected on the extraordinary progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, remembered those we have lost and renewed our commitment to the work that remains. The courage of patients, activists, scientists and caregivers has transformed what was once an unimaginable crisis into a story of perseverance, innovation and hope.
Health Care Is a Right
This week, I was honored to celebrate the rededication of HealthRIGHT 360's Access and Engagement Center, which has become a lifeline for thousands of San Franciscans seeking compassionate, high-quality care. Thanks to federal investments that I was proud to secure, this center will continue connecting individuals and families with the health care, behavioral health services and support they need to thrive.
The American Promise
As America marked the 250th anniversary of our independence, we reflected on the ideals that have guided our nation since our Founding: that all are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights. While our Founders declared those timeless principles, they also entrusted future generations with the sacred responsibility of democracy—of constantly striving to build a more perfect Union.
Power of Service
Speaking with this summer's Congressional interns one final time as a Member of Congress was both an honor and a reminder of why public service matters. Looking out at the next generation of leaders, I saw the same optimism, determination and sense of purpose that has always given me hope for our country's future.
Housing Held Hostage

At a time when too many families are struggling with rising housing costs, this legislation would expand access to affordable housing and create new opportunities for hardworking Americans to put down roots and build a better future.
A Home for Hope
This week, I joined President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and leaders from around the world for the opening of the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side—a powerful new space dedicated not simply to preserving history, but to inspiring future generations to shape it. Rooted in the belief that ordinary people working together can achieve extraordinary things, the Center was designed as a place for people to gather, reflect, connect and bring change home to their own communities.
Oath of Honor
Thirty-nine years ago this week, I raised my right hand and took the oath of office to represent San Francisco in Congress. Looking back on that day, I am filled with gratitude—not only for the opportunity to serve, but for the family who stood beside me, including my father, who had once brought me to witness his own swearing-in and was there to see mine. Shortly after that oath, I delivered my first speech on the floor of the House, and pledged to spend my time in Congress fighting against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
