This week, new provisions of President Trump’s Big Ugly Bill took effect, changing eligibility for SNAP and Medicaid while shifting higher administrative costs onto states. These changes threaten the food assistance and health care that millions of Americans rely on—and even deeper cuts and new work requirements are still ahead.

Prevention Saves Lives
Yesterday, I was honored to receive the Special Recognition Award at the Congressional Families Program’s 33rd Annual Action for Cancer Awareness Awards. Cancer touches every family, and this bipartisan gathering brought together leaders committed to improving prevention, expanding early detection and supporting those confronting a diagnosis.

Bring Them Home
This week, I met with advocates from the American Coalition for Ukraine to discuss how Congress can help bring home Ukrainian children who were cruelly abducted by Russia. Their advocacy is a powerful reminder that behind every stolen child is a family enduring unimaginable pain and waiting to be reunited.

Never Forget
Twenty-five years after the September 11th attacks, we remember the innocent lives stolen, the first responders who displayed extraordinary courage and the families forever changed. We also honor the servicemembers, public servants and countless Americans who answered that day’s horror with bravery, unity and hope. Their strength revealed the very best of our nation.

Gloria’s Generation
This week, our nation lost a fearless trailblazer, cherished friend and extraordinary champion for equality: Gloria Steinem. Gloria transformed what was possible for women in America, inspiring generations to know their power and equipping them with the confidence and courage to make a difference. Her influence reached from the boardroom to the halls of Congress—and our entire nation is stronger because of her leadership.

When Women Succeed, America Succeeds
This week, I joined San Francisco women leaders, workers, small-business owners and disability advocates at City Hall to commemorate Women’s Equality Day and the 106th anniversary of the certification of the 19th Amendment. Generations of courageous women organized, demonstrated and sacrificed to secure the right to vote. They were told women would have to wait. Women did not wait.

Protecting Social Security
Yesterday, we marked 91 years of Social Security standing as a pillar of opportunity and peace of mind for generations of Americans. For nearly a century, this vital lifeline has provided millions of seniors, people with disabilities and families with the economic security they earned through a lifetime of hard work.

For The Children
This week, I had the joy of joining the incredible students and staff at Booker T. Washington Community Service Center's Freedom School for Harambee. Together, we read Equality's Call: The Story of Voting Rights in America and celebrated the power of young people to learn, lead and help shape the future of our Democracy.
