Giving Thanks and Offering Prayers
Each year on Thanksgiving, we pause to cherish the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us and upon our nation. On this all-American holiday, we break bread with family and friends and spend time in our communities. Personally, I am endlessly grateful for all of life's blessings: for my dear husband Paul, for our beautiful family and for the people of San Francisco, who have entrusted me with the privilege of being their voice in Congress.

Yesterday, I joined Mayor London Breed and faith leaders from across our City for the San Francisco Interfaith Council's Thanksgiving Prayer Service – celebrating the love and unity that tie our City together. San Francisco is a proud beacon of respect and community, blessed with bonds that sweeten moments of joy and soften times of hardship. Those bonds are a gift for which I have always been grateful – never more so than in the past few weeks.

It is the greatest official honor of my life to represent our City in Congress. While I will not be leading the Democratic Caucus next year, I will continue seeking to honor the faith you have placed in me: defending our precious Democracy, building the future our children deserve and always upholding the values we hold dear.

Transgender Day of Remembrance
As our nation marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, the House Democratic Caucus mourns the countless Americans stolen away by the scourge of transphobic violence, a crisis that continues to disproportionately harm trans people of color. Let us offer comfort to grieving loved ones, honor the memory of those killed and continue fighting to save lives from the wicked forces of hate.

That fight remains more urgent than ever, as right-wing extremists target transgender Americans' most fundamental rights and freedoms. Horrified by such shameless bigotry, House Democrats are proud to march alongside our trans friends, neighbors and siblings as we work to uphold justice and dignity for all. That is why we enacted into law fully-inclusive federal hate crime protections with the historic Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. And it is why the Democratic House has twice passed the Equality Act, landmark legislation extending the full protections of the Civil Rights Act to LGBTQ Americans.

Heartbroken for so many beautiful souls murdered by hate and guided by relentless activists across the country, let us renew our resolve to build the future that our children deserve. Together, we will forge a safer, more just America – one where all of its people can freely and proudly exercise their right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Safety Tips for Family Feasting
The CDC issued these tips to help prevent food poisoning or foodborne illness during the holidays:

  1. Keep foods separated.
  2. Cook food thoroughly. Meat, chicken, turkey, seafood and eggs can carry germs that cause food poisoning.
  3. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Refrigerate or freeze any perishable food.
  4. Use pasteurized eggs for dishes containing raw eggs. Salmonella and other harmful germs can live on both the outside and inside of normal-looking eggs.
  5. Do not eat raw dough or batter. Dough and batter made with flour or eggs can contain harmful germs, such as E. coli and Salmonella.
  6. Thaw your turkey safely in the refrigerator, in a sink of cold water (change the water every 30 minutes) or in the microwave.
  7. Wash your hands with soap and water during key times when you are likely to get and spread germs.
