Instead of finally taking action to create jobs this week, House Republicans voted for the 37th time to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take patient protections away from the middle class. Their votes have now cost the American taxpayer over $53 million on pointless votes for their Patients’ Rights Repeal Act, which punishes seniors, students, children, families, and small business owners.

This week, House Republicans voted for an early Mother's Day Gift: the “More Work, Less Pay” Act. They misnamed their bill the “Working Family Flexibility Act” – but it only offers greater flexibility to bosses and lower wages to workers.

Here’s what this misnamed bill really means:

When I meet local business owners across San Francisco, like on recent merchant walks in Noe Valley and the Sunset, I often tell them that after marriage, starting a small business is the most optimistic thing anyone can do. Every day these entrepreneurs take on the challenge of owning and running a business with optimism, strength, and hope – driving our economy and building a brighter future. That’s why in Washington I’m fighting to help small businesses and manufacturers with the “Make It In America” initiative, so our families, our workers, and our middle class can make it in America.

Caring for Our Nation’s Heroes
We must honor the service of all of our men and women in uniform, remember those who perished at war, and celebrate the courage of those who come home. In Congress, our work is founded on a solemn promise: just as the military pledges to leave no soldier behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they return home.

We pray for the health and recovery of those injured, for the witnesses to the explosions, and for the first responders who arrived on the scene to tend to the wounded and secure the area.

On Tuesday, I was pleased to mark Equal Pay Day with my Democratic colleagues in Congress. Equal Pay Day is an opportunity to honor the ingenuity and hard work of every American woman, and to recognize how much more we must do to ensure they earn what they deserve.

Today in California, it can cost a family 20 percent of their annual income to send just one child to a child care center. And for low-income families and single parents, the burden is especially heavy. If we want to unleash the true power and potential of women in the workplace, we must do better. We must guarantee an economy and society that fulfills the motto: “families earning, children learning.” There can be no higher priority for a working mother than the success and security of her family. Numerous studies have shown time and again that the earlier children begin to learn, the better they’ll do later in life.

Below is a piece I wrote that appeared in USA TODAY on the Supreme Court’s oral arguments this week on two cases regarding discrimination against our nation’s LGBT community.

Today, we mark nearly three years since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law – enacting a measure that stays true to our core values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans. This law expands our competitiveness, promotes wellness and prevention, and enhances the economic security of the middle class. It enables Americans to pursue their dreams, start a business, change jobs, or care for their families with the certainty and security of affordable, quality health insurance.
