Making It In America
Making It In America
When I meet local business owners across San Francisco, like on recent merchant walks in Noe Valley and the Sunset, I often tell them that after marriage, starting a small business is the most optimistic thing anyone can do. Every day these entrepreneurs take on the challenge of owning and running a business with optimism, strength, and hope – driving our economy and building a brighter future. That's why in Washington I'm fighting to help small businesses and manufacturers with the "Make It In America" initiative, so our families, our workers, and our middle class can make it in America.
Earlier today, I was proud to tour local small business and manufacturer Heath Ceramics to help launch the upcoming SFMade Week, May 6th to May 12th, and San Francisco Small Business Week, May 13th to May 18th, along with local business owners, SFMade, the Mayor's Office of Small Business and Juma Ventures.
We can return to the day when more goods and more products around the world are stamped with the proud words: "Made in America."
Our "Make It In America" agenda is built on four key pillars:
- Enacting a national manufacturing strategy.
- Promoting the export of U.S. goods.
- Encouraging insourcing and innovation.
- Training a 21st century workforce.
By enacting this agenda we can stop the erosion of our manufacturing base, ensure our competitiveness worldwide, and create a level playing field for working families by building a future of prosperity with an economy built to last.
San Francisco has always been a proud bastion for small business, for manufacturing, and for American-made products, making it the perfect example of how our national drive to "Make It In America," leads the way in economic growth, job creation, and innovation.

Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable achievements, rich cultures, and extraordinary contributions of the AAPI community. In San Francisco, we are blessed with a vibrant and growing AAPI community, which strengthens our city by reminding us the beauty is in the mix. We should pass, without further delay, comprehensive immigration reform so that AAPI families are united and our diversity as a city and nation remain a virtue of America's strengths.
Cinco de Mayo Honors Our History
For over 150 years, Cinco de Mayo has been a source of pride to the people of Mexico—representing freedom, patriotism, and unity. Here in the United States, it has been an opportunity to honor the contributions, heritage, and rich history of Mexican Americans and all Hispanic Americans. The story of Cinco de Mayo will forever remain an inspiration and call of hope to families across the world.
