This Mother’s Day, let us honor the fabulous women in our lives by promoting policies that help women achieve the economic success they so rightfully deserve and our country needs. Because, while cards are nice, paid family and medical leave strengthens families.

Nearly 16 months into the 113th Congress, House Republicans have next to nothing to show for their time in the majority. They have failed to address comprehensive immigration reform, neglected to pass a single bill to create jobs, and refused to increase the minimum wage or extend emergency unemployment insurance - leaving over 2.6 million Americans out in the cold - with thousands joining their ranks each day.

During the District work week, I was honored to attend several events that demonstrate the values and diversity of our City. One such event was the foot-washing ceremony with immigrant families at the St. John Evangelist Episcopal Church on Holy Thursday.

This holy week, as millions celebrate Passover and Easter with friends, family, and loved ones, we can reflect as a nation on the power we draw from our neighbors and our fellow Americans. We have witnessed evil, and we have seen Americans stand united in the face of adversity.

On this week’s Equal Pay Day we honored the ingenuity and hard work of every American woman, and recognized how much more women must do to ensure they earn what they deserve. Every year, women have to work more than 3 extra months in order to take home the same amount a man earned last year. However, once again, Senate Republicans this week voted to reject the core American value of equality.

Without Further Delay
As the Senate moves forward with a vote to extend unemployment insurance, it is time for the House to act on behalf of the millions of Americans reeling from the loss of their emergency unemployment insurance.

This afternoon at the United Irish Cultural Center in the Richmond, I joined San Franciscans from all different backgrounds including faith leaders, community activists, law enforcement, and the business community to discuss the importance of comprehensive immigration reform.

The American people want action. Time and again since emergency unemployment insurance (UI) expired on December 28, Speaker Boehner has refused to bring up a vote on these benefits, cutting off this critical assistance to more than 2 million Americans – including almost 340,000 Californians.
