Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after the House passed the fiscal year 2009 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill by a strong bipartisan vote of 409 to 4. The bill builds on the historic increases for veterans and troops passed into law last year, which was the largest funding increase in the 77-year history of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement tonight after the House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act by a vote of 247 to 178. The bill closes loopholes that have allowed employers to avoid responsibility for discriminatory pay. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women continue to make only 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man.

The House passed the bill by a 424 to 1 vote yesterday; the bill now goes to President Bush for his signature into law:
