Cutting Costs and Combating the Climate Crisis
Celebrating the Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act
On Tuesday, I had the privilege of joining President Biden and Vice President Harris at the White House to celebrate the passage of the life-changing, history-making Inflation Reduction Act. This legislation is a monumental victory for America's families and for our planet – advancing the people's interest over the special interest.
The Inflation Reduction Act takes historic action to bring down health care costs for San Franciscans on Medicare: empowering Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs, establishing a $2,000 out-of-pocket limit on drug costs, capping insulin costs at $35 per month and providing free vaccines for seniors. This legislation also extends Affordable Care Act subsidies for three more years – saving a family of four up to $2,800 in annual premiums.
The Inflation Reduction Act also secured the single largest climate investment in U.S. history – delivering over $369 billion in clean energy and climate funding. These funds are fueling the creation of high-paying union jobs across the country, putting Americans to work achieving ambitious new climate goals.
At the same time, this legislation will help fight inflation by reducing the deficit by nearly $300 billion. Importantly, these investments are fully paid-for by making the wealthiest pay their fair share: implementing a 15 percent corporate minimum tax on billion-dollar companies and establishing a 1 percent tax on corporate stock buybacks.
With the Inflation Reduction Act, Congressional Democrats and President Biden have achieved a monumental victory for working families: strengthening Americans' health and financial security for generations to come.
Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi joined President Biden, Vice President Harris, Senator Schumer and advocates at the White House to celebrate the landmark Inflation Reduction Act.
Standing for Abortion Rights
This week, extreme MAGA Republicans unveiled a nationwide abortion ban: the latest, clearest signal of their intent to criminalize women's health freedom in all 50 states and arrest doctors for providing basic care. Make no mistake: if Republicans get the chance, they will work to pass laws even more draconian than this bill – just like the bans they have enacted in states like Texas, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
We are already seeing the agonizing reality of the radical bans enacted by radical right-wing state legislatures – and extreme MAGA Republicans in Congress clearly want to inflict this same suffering on every woman in every state. Instead of fighting actual crime, Republicans would drag doctors off to prison, while forcing ER physicians to focus on the threat of prosecution instead of the emergency medical care owed their patients. Meanwhile, House Republicans have overwhelming backed criminalizing abortion nationwide, rejecting women's right to travel for health care and even eliminating the right to birth control.
With Roe now out of their way, extreme MAGA Republicans are gleefully charging ahead to punish and control women's health decisions. In sharp contrast, Democrats are fighting to put People Over Politics – and we will never relent until we restore the rights of Roe as the law of the land.
California Abortion Access The State of California has launched abortion.ca.gov – providing people both inside and outside of California with information about abortions, their legal rights, where to find providers, how to pay for services and more. While other states try to prevent people from accessing this critical reproductive health care services, abortion.ca.gov includes an interactive Find a Provider tool for users to search for health care providers throughout California, as well as information about your rights if you live outside of California. |
Receiving Student Loan Relief
Student loan debt has reached crisis proportions – weighing on a generation of young people and holding back our economy. Thankfully, through his recent executive action, President Biden is delivering historic, targeted student debt relief to millions of borrowers – providing up to $20,000 in debt relief for Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 for non-Pell Grant recipients. Borrowers are eligible for this relief if their individual income is less than $125,000 ($250,000 for married couples).
