Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement on UN Human Rights Day, marking the 71st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948:

“On UN Human Rights Day, the world marks the historic signing of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and its resounding affirmation of the ‘inherent dignity’ of every human being.  More than 70 years later, Americans remain steadfast in our efforts to uphold this fundamental principle and defend the right to life, liberty, equality and peace for every man, woman and child.

“Sadly, today, the global community continues to witness abuses of human rights and human dignity that challenge the conscience of the world.  In the barbarous campaigns of exploitation and dehumanization waged against innocent Uighur and Rohingya communities, the shameful attacks against countless Kurdish civilians, the cruel crackdown on Iran’s courageous protesters, the disgraceful treatment of vulnerable immigrants and refugee families at our southern border, the fight for rights and the rule of law in Hong Kong and in countless other cases around the world, we see the continuing urgency of all people to stand up against atrocities and violations of rights wherever and whenever they occur.  In this mission, we are inspired by the vision and voices of young people across the globe who are speaking out to advance a brighter, more just and equal future for all.

“For House Democrats, the magnitude and moral gravity of this assault on basic human rights compels us to act.  Today and on all days, we reaffirm our commitment to standing with the millions fighting for their dignity, safety and freedom both here at home and around the world, and pledge to work always to advance a future of peace and prosperity for all.”
