Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Trump Administration formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel:

"The United States and Israel share an unbreakable bond built on mutual values. Together in friendship we have supported efforts enabling Israeli and Palestinian leaders to find a way forward toward a just and durable two-state solution with two people living side-by-side in peace and security.

"Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish homeland. But in the absence of a negotiated settlement between Israel and the Palestinians, moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem now may needlessly spark mass protests, fuel tensions, and make it more difficult to reach a durable peace.

"As an eternal friend and partner to Israel, America must advance serious and clear policies that lead the way to a lasting and just peace, not antagonize the parties of this conflict. It is vital that we ensure that this land of pioneers and dreamers can thrive, and honor those brave heroes who have sacrificed all for peace by being smart and strong, not reckless and rash, in our actions."
