San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance:

"Each Transgender Day of Remembrance, our nation comes together to honor the countless transgender Americans who have suffered unthinkable violence or have been brutally murdered simply for who they are. While we tragically do not know all of the names of those we have lost, we hold their memories in our hearts and pray for the families in anguish.

"This year in particular, our transgender neighbors and loved ones have endured a heartbreaking and accelerating campaign of violence and persecution: children targeted by a tide of hateful legislation, women of color suffering a spike of horrific attacks. Proudly, Democrats have long stood shoulder to shoulder with LGBTQ activists to advance the cause of full equality for all. With our monumental Equality Act, which has twice passed the House and we are fighting to enact into law, Democrats will ensure that no American faces discrimination in the workplace or any place. And under the fearless leadership of President Biden, we have secured stronger protections in health care for transgender Americans and reversed the shameful damage done by the previous Administration to ensure our transgender Servicemembers can once again openly serve our country.

"Let us renew our vow to honor the beautiful souls we have lost, ensure our transgender community feels seen, heard and represented – and never relent until every person is free to live freely as their authentic selves."
