San Francisco – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement for the 25th World AIDS Day, which is on Sunday, December 1:

"Twenty-five years ago, on the first World AIDS Day, we might only have dreamed that today, we would be within reach of an AIDS-free generation. We might only have dreamed, in those dark days when so many suffered in the shadows and even the word ‘AIDS' was considered taboo in Congress, that nations of the world would stand together in the effort to eradicate HIV/AIDS once and for all.

"But today, on the 25th World AIDS Day, the world stands as one. AIDS is a resourceful disease, ever mutating to escape our destruction. But we will be even more resourceful and cunning in our fight against it. Even in difficult budgetary times, we must remember that cutting back on our HIV/AIDS investments is a false economy that will only cost us more in the future. We cannot, and we will not, allow AIDS to claw its way back from the brink.

"Today, in the name of those loved ones we have lost, and those we might save, we rededicate ourselves to prevention, testing, treatment, and the search for a cure. We accept our shared responsibility to fight HIV/AIDS across the globe, and we vow to make the dream of an AIDS-free generation a reality."
