Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the beginning of Ramadan, which begins at sundown tonight in the United States:

“The holy month of Ramadan is a time of family and fasting, reflection and renewal, prayer and discipline, sacrifice and spirituality. It is an opportunity for Muslim families to gather together to celebrate their faith, to honor their heritage, to embrace their traditions and to look forward with hope toward the future.

“Across the United States, Ramadan is a chance for all Americans to reaffirm our common commitment to the values embedded in our history: our belief in diversity as a source of strength, in pluralism as a source of pride, in freedom and justice as sources of unity. It is a reminder of the ideals that bind us together as a people – the drive to promote the general welfare, to protect religious freedom, to treat our neighbors with dignity and respect, to form a more perfect union.

“Muslim Americans make extraordinary contributions to the life and success of our nation every day, whether as Members of Congress or as leaders in business, medicine, research, law, the arts, and academia. May their success continue to enrich and strengthen our country. To all who observe Ramadan, may this month bless you with peace, wisdom, understanding, and joy. Ramadan Kareem.”
