Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 50th anniversary of the landmark Fair Housing Act of 1968:
“The Fair Housing Act stands as one of the landmark victories in the struggle for civil rights and social justice. Prior to 1968, widespread, insidious discrimination in housing prevented millions from pursuing their American dreams. For half a century, this bedrock of our nation’s civil rights legislation has provided a bulwark against discrimination and a path to justice.
“Today, much more needs to be done to ensure these critical protections are enforced, and that the legacies of redlining and racial segregation are never allowed to divide our communities. Yet, the Trump Administration has utterly abandoned its duty to protect the promise of fair housing. HUD’s proposed change to its mission statement would remove the promise of inclusive, discrimination-free communities. This shameful proposal is the capstone of the Administration’s betrayal of our nation’s commitment to progress toward building diverse communities that respect our founding principles of fairness, equality and opportunity.
“Democrats are committed to defending the protections enshrined in the Fair Housing Act while also expanding access to affordable housing for all Americans. We are proud to have secured key achievements in the omnibus that combat some of the damage of the GOP Tax Scam by expanding the critical Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, ensuring more low-income families can benefit from quality, affordable housing. At this critical time, Democrats and Republicans must work together to end discriminatory housing practices and lift up communities across the country.”
