Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement commemorating the 10th anniversary of the bipartisan Energy Independence and Security Act, passed by the Democratic Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 19, 2007:

"Ten years ago, Republicans joined Democrats to set the United States on a path toward a clean, secure and independent energy future. Since the passing of the Energy Independence and Security Act, America has dramatically increased the production of clean renewable fuels, saved families billions of dollars and millions of gallons of gasoline, and boosted energy efficiency in consumer products, buildings and vehicles.

"Despite this progress, vital work remains to build a healthy, sustainable planet and to address the urgent health, economic and security threats of the climate crisis. Yet, far from seizing the opportunity to invest in innovative industries and clean, renewable technologies, the Trump Administration is rolling back environmental protections and abandoning America's leadership position in the global fight against the climate crisis.

"Democrats remain committed to defending progress and will continue to fight the toxic Republican agenda that places the interests of polluters above those of the American people. Democrats will join with states, cities, innovators, entrepreneurs and the American people to honor our moral responsibility to preserve the beauty of God's creation for our children and grandchildren."
