Pelosi Statement on Supreme Court Arizona Independent Redistricting Case

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision in Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission:

"Today, the Court rightly affirmed the Constitutionality of independent redistricting commissions established by a vote of the people.

"A large segment of the public has long questioned the fairness of legislative redistricting and has long hoped for a more objective process. With the Court's decision and the clear public sentiment, it behooves the Congress to pass legislation setting national standards for state redistricting commissions. Redistricting commissions should reflect the diversity of their states and communities, and it must be founded on a full and fair count of the Census.

"The American people deserve confidence in their democracy. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren of California has long taken the lead in championing independent redistricting, and it is my hope that Congress will move forward with her legislation calling for independent redistricting commissions across the country."
