Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the historic vote in the Senate to invoke cloture on legislation to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”:

"Today's landmark vote in the Senate moves us one step closer to the historic repeal of the discriminatory 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy. After a bipartisan vote in the House, the Senate is now primed to honor the American ideal of equality, recognizing the contributions all Americans have to make to the defense of our nation.

“Getting to this point would not have been possible without the leadership of Congressman Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania. He used his service to our country on the battlefield to advocate for this historic legislation, and worked tirelessly along with Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis to rid our nation of this policy.

"The repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' will close the door on a fundamental unfairness, and is awaited eagerly by many. And as I have said before, this policy will be only a memory by the end of this year."
