Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Rosh Hashanah, which begins this evening:

"Tonight, Jewish families across the United States and the world will observe Rosh Hashanah and the beginning of the Days of Awe. This special, sacred period is a time for reflection and renewal – an opportunity to contemplate the past and take steps toward a better, more hopeful future.

"During this season of reflection, we all must recommit not to shy away from our shared obligation to speak out against acts of intolerance and hate. From the violence at Charlottesville to bigoted attacks on immigrant and minority communities around the nation, recent acts of intolerance have torn apart our communities and trampled on the fundamental American values of respect, liberty and diversity. Together, we must reject violence and work side-by-side to advance a more peaceful, tolerant and hopeful world for all.

"As the Jewish people gather with friends and loved ones to rejoice, reflect and renew the commitment to tikkun olam, let people of all faiths join in prayer that this year will bring a future of peace and prosperity to all. Shana tovah u'metukah – may you have a happy and sweet New Year."
