Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on President Trump's tariffs announcement:

"For decades, I have called on administrations of both parties to get tough and crack down on unfair trade practices, especially on China and their long-standing human rights abuses.

"In 1989, the U.S.-China trade deficit was $6.2 billion a year. Today, it is more than $7 billion a week. As USW President Leo Gerard rightly says, ‘China's actions have has killed American mills, thrown tens of thousands out of work and devastated mill towns.'

"We must be strong and smart in fighting back against trade cheaters' assault on American workers – in a targeted and strategic manner. It is distressing to see President Trump's chaotic roll-out needlessly maximizing the collateral damage to American workers, consumers and our international alliances. Antagonizing our allies and practically inviting retaliation on American manufacturing was completely unnecessary.

"While we're studying the specifics, it is clear that there is bipartisan agreement in the Congress that we need to confront unfair trade practices."
