Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after the Trump Administration signed what it is calling a "phase one" trade agreement with China:

"President Trump's failed China strategy has inflicted deep, long-term damage to American agriculture and rattled our economy in exchange for more of the promises that Beijing has been breaking for years.

"Instead of working with the EU, Japan and other large economies to create maximum pressure on China, President Trump alienated our allies and left Americans to pay the price alone. Instead of standing strong for human rights, President Trump showed he would quickly cave to curry favor with Beijing. If America does not speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, then we lose all moral authority to speak out for human rights any place in the world.

"Now, with the economy losing thousands of manufacturing jobs and Farm Country reeling from the damage caused by President Trump, Americans are left with nothing more than a showy television ceremony to try to hide the complete absence of concrete progress, transparency or accountability in this ‘phase one' agreement."
