Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama laid out a comprehensive framework for U.S. counterterrorism strategy in an address at the National Defense University:

“President Obama’s address reaffirmed our nation’s firm commitment to preserving our security while upholding our civil liberties. As elected officials, we have no greater responsibility than protecting the American people; with the President’s statement today, we have a broad framework to meet that duty and maintain our commitment to our country’s highest ideals.

“The President has made transparency and the disclosure of information to the public on our counterterrorism policies and operations a priority. He should be commended for his promise to work with Congress to ensure proper and appropriate oversight. He should earn our support for a comprehensive approach to our actions around the world, including the use of our diplomatic partnerships, and our foreign assistance as the bedrocks of effective outreach and leadership.

“As more than a decade of war comes to a close, the U.S. must meet the challenges of our time with strength and clarity in our policies. That is what President Obama laid out today. Members of Congress look forward to working together to defend our people and advance our values.”
