Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the House passed the Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Human Rights Act to expand sanctions against the Iranian regime and pressure Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons:

“Today, the House again made it clear that the United States will use every tool at our disposal to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. With overwhelming bipartisan support, our action keeps up the pressure on the Iranian regime – to halt its pursuit of a nuclear capability, to suspend uranium enrichment, to return to the negotiating table and honor its international obligations.

“This bill expands on the work of the Democratic-led Congress to implement the most far-reaching sanctions ever enacted against Iran and builds on President Obama’s actions to tighten measures targeting the regime’s energy and financial sectors. Already, the world is seeing the results of American leadership: the Iranian economy is suffering; Iran’s partners are cutting off ties of trade and commerce; and Iran is feeling the bite of our sanctions.

“A nuclear Iran is a threat to the security of the United States, the region, and the world, and today’s measure is a sign of our unwavering resolve and unyielding commitment to deter Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon. I commend Ranking Member Howard Berman and Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for their leadership in passing this legislation.”
