Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement as the Supreme Court begins to hear oral arguments in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:

"The true story of America is a story that celebrates the constant march of progress toward full and equal rights for all people, regardless of who they are or whom they love.

"Across the country, the rights of LGBT citizens remain under attack. Unfortunately, those who seek to reverse the remarkable progress we've made continue to seek justification for their flagrant, hateful discrimination. The oral arguments heard today will make clear that no business or organization open to the public can hide their discriminatory practices behind the guise of religious liberty. The Masterpiece Cakeshop case is about the most fundamental right of all Americans to be free from persecution and discrimination.

"As a nation built on the ideals of freedom and justice for all, we must always seek to remain faithful to those indispensable values. The Supreme Court must once again affirm that no law sanctions discrimination and that every American has the right to be treated fairly and equally."
