San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy gained 175,000 jobs and the unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent in May. With private businesses adding 178,000 jobs, this marks the 39th consecutive month of private sector growth:

"Today's jobs report shows progress for our economy, our workers, and our middle class. But it is not enough. We must work every day to strengthen our families, support our businesses, and put people back to work in good paying jobs.

"Republicans in Congress know how we can work together to restore Americans' confidence in our economy: stop blocking measures to create jobs and appoint budget conferees so we can engage in an open and fair debate on our priorities for the future. Americans cannot afford more Republican obstruction or partisan political games. Our communities deserve a laser-like focus on solutions to grow the economy and bolster the middle class.

"Only at the negotiating table can we reach an agreement on a budget that replaces the debilitating cuts of the GOP sequester, that creates jobs, that bolsters the middle class, and that responsibly reduces the deficit. There is no time to waste."
