Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after House Republicans stalled bipartisan Russian sanctions legislation, which passed the Senate 98-2:
“House Republicans’ effort to obstruct and weaken the Senate’s bipartisan Russian sanctions bill is not only irresponsible; it endangers our national security and threatens our democracy.
“With each passing week, the American people learn more about the extent of Russia’s brazen interference in our presidential election.  Yesterday, public testimony from the Department of Homeland Security and the Intelligence Community revealed that the Russian government attacked 21 states’ election systems, yet President Trump and House Republicans continue to show a total lack of concern about Russian aggression.
“If Speaker Ryan and House Republicans value their oath to the Constitution, they must hold Russia accountable for its actions and swiftly pass this sanctions bill.  An outside, independent commission to get to the bottom of Russia’s assault on our elections –  and to prevent it next time – is urgently needed as well.  We must take strong, swift and unified action to protect our democracy.”
