Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement after Republicans voted 231 – 198 for a radical gun bill that would force each state to accept the concealed carry standards of every other state, a bill strongly opposed by many law enforcement organizations, mayors, public health officials, religious groups and other organizations:
“Today, House Republicans voted to deliver an early Christmas gift to the NRA by throwing open the door to violent criminals and abusers carrying concealed weapons wherever they please.  Despite the warnings of many law enforcement organizations, Republicans are steamrolling states’ and cities’ right to protect their communities, forcing them to accept the concealed carry standards of any other state – even those that do not require any permit at all.
“This radical Republican bill is a direct threat to public safety.  Republicans are inviting violent criminals, domestic abusers, convicted stalkers, and those who have never undergone a background check or received any gun safety training the green light to carry their concealed weapons wherever they want.  This extreme bill also overrides state and local laws that protect people in daycares, K-12 schools, shopping malls, movie theaters, parks and other public spaces from concealed weapons.
“Just two months after the sickening attacks in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, Republicans have decided to honor the families of the victims by passing a stunningly dangerous bill that opens the floodgates to guns.  While Republicans fight efforts to protect our communities, Democrats will continue to fight for urgent action on commonsense gun safety measures that would help combat the horrific daily tragedy of gun violence.”
