Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement in recognition of Earth Day:

"For 50 years, Earth Day has given us a chance to celebrate the beauty of God's creation while also recognizing the inherent fragility of the planet we all call home. On Earth Day, we join together to reaffirm our collective responsibility to be good stewards of our environment and combat the existential threat posed by the climate crisis by creating a clean economy with the good-paying jobs of the future.

"This year, Earth Day comes as the world faces a health and economic crisis of staggering proportions. Yet, during this unprecedented threat, the President once again refuses to heed experts' warnings about the damage his dirty, special interest agenda is causing to public health and the planet. While tens of thousands of Americans have tragically died from the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump has continued his relentless rollback of critical environmental safeguards. The President is enabling his polluter friends and donors to unleash toxic chemicals into our communities, poisoning our children's clean air and clean water – despite studies showing a clear link between higher pollution and increased coronavirus death rates.

"This Earth Day, House Democrats stand with people around the world calling for thoughtful, science-based leadership that puts the health and well-being of our families first. Together, we must build on the bold steps we have already taken to protect the people and places we love, fight the climate crisis and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. The time for action is now."
