San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to congratulate Congressman John Dingell on officially becoming the longest-serving Member of Congress in the history of the United States:

“Today, we recognize Congressman John Dingell, a remarkable leader who is taking his place in history as the longest-serving Member of Congress. As the Dean of the people’s House, he has given his constituents, his colleagues, and his country more than 57 years of extraordinary and effective leadership.

“A proud son of Michigan, Congressman Dingell has had a hand in nearly every issue vital to the American people: from the air we breathe and the water we drink, to essential consumer protections, to our most basic civil rights. But it is his contributions to the health of the American people that leaves an indelible mark on our progress as a country. In 1965, he held the gavel in his hand for the passage of Medicare and in 2010, he sat at President Obama’s side when the Affordable Care Act – and his life’s work – become the law of the land.

“To work alongside such an extraordinary public servant is to be inspired by the history of our country and to be humbled by the seriousness of our work. It is a personal and official privilege to congratulate John Dingell not only on the length of his service, but the quality of his leadership. His compassion, grace, and leadership will forever be the standard all public servants hope to reach.”
