Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on a hearing to be held tomorrow by the Committee on House Administration on the impact of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA). Pelosi also stated her opposition to H.R. 1316, proposed by Congressmen Mike Pence and Albert Wynn, which would amend campaign finance laws.

"A recent report of the Campaign Finance Institute at George Washington University documenting the success of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act concluded that both major political parties were able to wean themselves of 'soft money,' replacing the lost funds with small dollar contributions.

"This was a healthy development for our political system. For those of us who supported the law, it confirmed our belief that our major political parties could thrive without unlimited contributions from special interests.

'I oppose H.R. 1316 because it will likely re-introduce large, unregulated special interest money into federal elections. It will undermine not only BCRA, but also Congress's hundred-year effort to keep unlimited special interest money out of federal elections. The Committee on House Administration should look to the success of BCRA and build on it, rather than begin its dismantling."
