Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the furloughs of civilian defense employees, which begin this week:

“This week will demonstrate the real consequences of Republican inaction on our nation’s budget: more than 600,000 civilian defense workers will face furloughs and less pay, and their families will pay the price. At the same time, Republicans’ policy of sequestration will undermine our economic growth and weaken our national security.

“Republicans could help put an end to these drastic, unnecessary, and harmful measures by joining Democrats in appointing budget conferees without further delay. We must act in a bipartisan way to enact a budget that halts the sequester, that grows our economy, that no longer attempts to balance our books on the backs of Americans working to strengthen our national defense.

“Furloughs, sequesters, and forced pay cuts are not the answer to our budget challenges. Only by working together, sitting at the negotiating table, can we reach an agreement that replaces the devastating cuts of sequestration with a plan to create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and responsibly reduce the deficit.”
