San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding the Congressional Budget Office’s recently updated estimates on the effects of the Affordable Care Act:

“Today’s CBO report is good news for both the physical and fiscal health of our nation.  Just weeks after cresting the milestone of 7.5 million Americans enrolled in quality, affordable coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces, the CBO report finds that the Affordable Care Act continues to surpass expectations.

“Even as the CBO increases the number of those expected to have health insurance in 2017 because of the Affordable Care Act to 26 million Americans, the non-partisan group is projecting that the coverage expansion will cost $104 billion less than previously estimated over the next decade – a million more Americans with health security for billions fewer dollars.  The projections of premiums have declined too – with the projected benchmark silver plan premiums having declined by 15 percent since March 2010.

“Evidence continues to mount that the Affordable Care Act is building a healthier and stronger future for our nation, improving the quality of care and holding down cost growth for millions of American families.  Yet despite the savings the Affordable Care Act is realizing for middle-class families and for our nation, Republicans continue their desperate fixation with its repeal.  It is long past time for Republicans to abandon their ceaseless assaults on the health coverage of millions of Americans, and join Democrats to ensure that in the United States of America, health care will be a right, not a privilege.”
