Seoul, Republic of Korea – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement upon the conclusion of her bipartisan delegation's visit to the Republic of Korea:
"A highlight of our visit to Korea was a moving ceremony, presided over by Speaker Chung Ui-hwa of the National Assembly, honoring Chairman Charles Rangel, who is veteran of the Korean War and a longtime advocate for the Republic of Korea. The tribute continued at an interparliamentary luncheon, which provided an excellent opportunity for dialogue with senior Korean lawmakers. Charlie Rangel is recognized in Korea as the personification of the U.S.-Korea alliance.
"Our delegation's priorities throughout our five nation visit to Asia come together on the Korean Peninsula: security cooperation, trade and human rights.
"We were honored by an audience with President Park Geun-hye, the first woman president in northeast Asia, who underscored the importance of the U.S.-Korea alliance that has advanced peace and security on the Korean Peninsula. The President was optimistic about the reunification of North and South Korea as a way to promote peace and prosperity, and stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
"On security, our delegation was briefed by General Curtis Michael Scaparotti, Commander, U.S. Forces Korea on the security situation on the Peninsula and the mission of the 28,000 men and women based here. We also met with Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se to discuss regional security issues and the planned establishment of a U.N. field office dedicated to monitoring human rights abuses in North Korea.
"On trade, our delegation met with Choi Kyung-hwan, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy/Minister of Strategy & Finance, and detailed how implementation of existing free trade agreements, such as the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, may impact decisions regarding free trade and consideration of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement currently being negotiated by 12 nations.
"The United States is well-represented by Ambassador Mark Lippert in Korea. In response to the heinous attack he suffered, he has further proven to be a diplomat of strength, dignity and courage. He commands the respect of the Korean people, has the confidence of President Obama, and has our gratitude."
