Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Trump Administration revised implementation guidelines for the National Environment Policy Act (NEPA) to decrease climate change-related permitting requirements for infrastructure projects:
“For 50 years, the National Environmental Policy Act has stood as a cornerstone of America’s commitment to environmental stewardship. NEPA’s vital safeguards ensure that every community has a voice in our efforts to build the resilient infrastructure needed to combat the accelerating climate crisis. The Trump Administration’s latest anti-science, anti-governance assault on this bedrock protection is another dangerous special interest giveaway that threatens environmental justice and climate sustainability.
“In contrast, House Democrats will continue to be relentless in securing environmental justice and advancing the clean energy economy of the future. Two weeks ago, we proudly unveiled the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis’s Solving the Climate Crisis action plan – which puts environmental justice front and center. At the same time, we passed H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act, to create millions of good-paying jobs and combat injustice as we secure the robust, sustainable infrastructure investments that our communities deserve.
“Every day, our communities are feeling the impact of generations of environmental injustice and systemic racism, made worse by the growing climate crisis. House Democrats will ensure every community has a voice in this critical fight as we work to secure the investments needed for our communities to grow and thrive. Working together, we will solve the climate crisis and make America’s infrastructure the envy of the world.”
