Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the 9th anniversary of the Post 9/11 GI bill, passed by the Democratic Congress and signed into law on June 30, 2008:
”Nine years ago, a Democratic Congress enacted the most sweeping veterans benefit and education law in generations. We honored our debt to the heroes in uniform who keep us safe, and restored the promise of a full, four-year college education for over 1.75 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families.
“As we mark this anniversary of progress for our veterans and servicemembers, however, the Republican Congress is threatening millions of veterans’ health care with Trumpcare. When the GOP seeks to eviscerate Medicaid in order to hand tax breaks to billionaires, they are hurting the almost 2 million veterans who rely on Medicaid. Trumpcare’s repeal of the Medicaid expansion alone would take Medicaid away from 340,000 veterans.
“Our veterans make it possible for us to enjoy the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness we celebrate on Independence Day. We must honor our sacred responsibility to provide them a healthy life, and the liberty to pursue their happiness as well. Democrats will not rest in the fight to end veteran homelessness, and to deliver veterans’ benefits and quality health care in a timely fashion. Just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they come home.”
