San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 82nd anniversary of the President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's signing of the Social Security Act:

"Today, we mark the 82nd anniversary of Social Security: the essential promise that in our great country, a future of security and dignity will be offered to every family. For generations, Social Security has guaranteed the dignity of a good retirement and safeguarded the stability, success and independence of millions of hard-working families.

"Democrats believe that Social Security must be defended and strengthened. Republicans in Congress are working to undermine the future of Social Security with massive tax breaks for billionaires at the expense of the middle class and those working to get there. From the direct cuts in the Trump budget to the backdoor attempt to gut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security through Republicans' tax cuts for the wealthiest, Republicans are threatening the bedrock of Americans' economic security.

"The American people deserve a government that protects their interests, not one that ransacks the future of seniors and working people in order to hand more tax breaks to billionaires. Democrats will fight every day to defend the bedrock guarantee of Social Security and uphold this sacred covenant for future generations."
