San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement in recognition of the anniversary of September 11, 2001:
"Each September 11, Americans bow our heads to remember the horrific attack that cut short the lives of nearly 3,000 innocents. We recall with grief and heartbreak the mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends, colleagues and neighbors who perished. We reaffirm our commitment to the 9/11 families and the first responders and workers struggling with illness acquired sifting through the rubble in the line of duty.
"On this solemn anniversary, we find strength in the unity and courage with which the American people responded to these attacks. Through our grief, we proudly remember the first responders who bravely plunged into burning buildings, the heroes who charged up the aisle, and the arms and doors thrown open to families in need. In our darkest hours, they showed the world the best of what it means to be an American: resolve, bravery and unity in the face of evil.
"Because of those heroes, the legacy of September 11 is one of resilience. In the names of the fallen, we reaffirm our enduring commitment to the American values of justice, liberty and equality. We pledge to honor their memories by striving to build a more hopeful and free future for all. And we hold fast to this message: that hate and terror will never defeat our great nation. May we forever remember the spirit of September 11. May God bless the memories of all the heroes of that day."
