San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in support of the Unite Against Hate gathering in San Francisco today, in anticipation of Saturday's white supremacist rally at Crissy Field:

"For a long time, our city has been a beacon of peace, openness and love for many people, some of whom faced discrimination elsewhere. Those experiences are written into the soul of our community and inform our reverence for peaceful dissent and free speech.

"This weekend, let us honor the values of love that make our city and our community so extraordinary. Let us embrace the spirit of our namesake, St. Francis, and the Song of St. Francis that is our city's anthem.

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

"O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."
