San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement calling for the cancellation of the $300 million, no-bid contract with Whitefish Energy Holdings to rebuild Puerto Rico’s energy grid following allegations of misconduct in the contract award process:
“The inexcusable Whitefish contract must be terminated immediately.  No federally-funded contract should be immune from routine oversight or circumvent a federal audit.  No company that misrepresents that FEMA approved the contract, when in fact it didn’t, should profit off of American taxpayers.

“The incompetence and mismanagement surrounding the Whitefish deal must be fully investigated.  The Trump Administration and Whitefish Energy Holdings must fully cooperate with Congressional committees, GAO and Inspectors General to determine how this absurd deal placed American taxpayers on the hook for $300 million.  Meanwhile, PREPA must immediately transition to the more cost-effective mutual aid network, which is being successfully employed to restore and rebuild the power grids in Texas and Florida, so that power can be restored to the 70 percent of Puerto Ricans who continue to live in the dark.

“A month after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans are still struggling to recover.  They deserve to know that their government is taking this crisis seriously and not wasting time, money and resources engaging in cronyism at the expense of American families.”
