Pelosi Update

Last week in San Francisco, while Republicans fled from angry constituents and canceled town halls, I met with my constituents at a community health care forum to discuss the Republicans’ all-out assault on affordable health care in our nation and plans to Make America Sick Again.

Families were rightfully concerned.  Republicans’ plans will dump massive health costs onto middle class families while handing a multi-million dollar tax break to the 400 wealthiest families in America.  It will dramatically raise the out-of-pocket health care costs of working families.  And it will take away health care from millions of seniors and the disabled.

Dr. King said it best: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman.”  We will not be dragged backward.  Democrats are standing our ground to protect the Affordable Care Act, because – we believe, as you believe – that health care is the right of every American, not just for the privileged few.

Each immigrants’ hopes, dreams and aspirations make America more American.  That is the great strength of our country.  But the Trump Administration’s bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment threatens our values as a nation.

That is why yesterday, I heard directly from refugee and immigrant rights organizations in San Francisco concerned about the dangerous immigration policies, including the unconstitutional Muslim and refugee ban, and the immoral ICE raids that separate hard-working immigrant families.  I thanked them and the lawyers for their incredible work.

No student should face discrimination at school because of who they are. Transgender students have the same right to a safe environment at school and in their community as everyone else. Withdrawing the historic guidance from the Obama Administration to protect transgender students is a cruel blow to an already vulnerable group of young people.

This move shows that President Trump cannot be trusted to defend the rights of LGBT Americans.  This is not a state issue. This is an issue of equality for all.  The Administration’s wanton disregard of protecting the civil rights of the LGBT community is harmful to our communities and our schools.

Democrats will keep demanding that the Trump Administration advocate for all Americans. Transgender students and all students are protected by the Constitution and Title IX, regardless of this Administration’s callous position.  House Democrats will never stop confronting bigotry and discrimination wherever it is practiced, and will never stop fighting for LGBT equality.

My constituent, a Senior and surviving spouse of a Veteran, submitted a claim to the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) to apply for benefits as a surviving spouse. My constituent was completely dependent on her spouse’s retirement income, and when he passed away, she began experiencing severe financial hardship. Upon learning of my constituent’s situation, my staff contacted the VA relaying the urgency of her situation. Through the inquiry process, my staff discovered that one branch of the VA had been waiting for information from another branch. My staff was able to resolve the disconnect, and my constituent is now receiving her benefits.
