Protecting Women’s Health
Celebrating Women's Equality Day
Last Friday, the American people marked the 102nd anniversary of the 19th Amendment: a hard-won victory secured by generations of women bravely fighting to build a more perfect union. In winning the right to vote more than a century ago, trailblazing suffragists tore down a seemingly immovable barrier to women's full and equal citizenship in our Democracy. Yet even as Americans celebrate this triumph in our history, women's most basic rights and dignities remain under assault by a radical Supreme Court and extreme MAGA Republicans – many seeking to impose a national abortion ban criminalizing women's health freedom in all 50 states.
That is why I joined Congresswoman Jackie Speier and local women's health leaders for a roundtable discussion on reproductive health – part of a nationwide Women's Health Day of Action. In the face of Republicans' dark crusade of punishment and control, we take great pride in California's leadership on reproductive health: a beacon of hope and refuge at a time of widespread fear.
Unwavering in our commitment to reproductive justice, the Democratic House has passed landmark legislation to enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into law, establish a federal right to use birth control and reaffirm the freedom to access health care across state lines. Democrats will never relent our fight to defend the reproductive rights of every American, everywhere.
Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi honored Women's Equality Day with a roundtable discussing the importance of defending reproductive freedom.
Late-Filing Tax Return Relief
To help struggling taxpayers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Internal Revenue Service will waive late-filing penalties for a broad range of tax returns from 2019 and 2020. To be eligible for this relief, taxpayers must file their federal tax returns by September 30, 2022. This waiver only covers the failure to pay a penalty imposed for not filing your federal tax return by the due date. It does not cover the failure to pay a penalty imposed for not paying your federal taxes on time. The IRS will automatically refund those who paid these penalties already, delivering more than $1.2 billion in refunds or credits to nearly 1.6 million taxpayers.
Resources for Federal Student Loan Relief This weekend, California will continue to experience extreme heat, straining the power grid with increased energy demands. Extreme heat is particularly dangerous for outdoor workers, children, seniors, historically underserved and overburdened communities, and people with underlying health conditions. To view tips on how to stay safe in this extreme heat, please visit the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services. |
