Stonewalling Justice

Pelosi Update

The President’s Abuse of Power & Obstruction
Tuesday, The White House asserted that the Administration will not comply with House Committee subpoenas as part of the impeachment inquiry, making false claims about the Constitution, House rules and House precedent.

For a while, the President has tried to normalize lawlessness.  Now, he is trying to make lawlessness a virtue.  The American people have already heard the President’s own words – ‘do us a favor, though.’  The President’s actions threaten our national security, violate our Constitution and undermine the integrity of our elections.  The White House letter is only the latest attempt to cover up his betrayal of our democracy, and to insist that the President is above the law.

This letter is manifestly wrong, and is simply another unlawful attempt to hide the facts of the Trump Administration’s brazen efforts to pressure foreign powers to intervene in the 2020 elections.  Despite the White House’s stonewalling, we see a growing body of evidence that shows that President Trump abused his office and violated his oath to ‘protect, preserve and defend the Constitution.’

The White House should be warned that continued efforts to hide the truth of the President’s abuse of power from the American people will be regarded as further evidence of obstruction.

The President is not above the law.  He will be held accountable.

Victory for the Rule of Law and our Constitution
Today, the D.C. Circuit Court issued its ruling affirming the House Oversight Committee’s oversight authority and subpoena over the Presidents tax returns.

The ruling is a resounding victory for the rule of law, our Constitution and its system of checks and balances.  It is a victory for our democracy, as the courts reaffirm the Congress’s authority and responsibility to conduct oversight and consider legislation on behalf of the American people.  As the Court stated, ‘Contrary to the President’s arguments, the Committee possesses authority under both the House Rules and the Constitution to issue the subpoena, and Mazars must comply.’

Armed with the support of the Courts and guided by the wisdom of the Constitution, we will continue to protect our democracy.  We salute Chairman Cummings and the Oversight Committee for their outstanding work to honor our Constitution, and thank all Members for their patriotic leadership to defend our Constitution.

A constituent contacted my office to get assistance with the United States Department of State for his parents’ visa applications. His parents were experiencing long delays with their visa applications because of the Presidential Proclamation 9645. On behalf of the constituent, my office submitted medical documents explaining his parents’ medical conditions and requested an expedited processing. As a result, the Embassy expedited and issued his parents’ visa applications.
