Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in reaction to the continued detention of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. San Suu Kyi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, is the leading advocate for democracy and human rights in Burma. She has spent the majority of the last 18 years under house arrest despite winning the country?s last democratic election in 1990, which was annulled by the military regime.

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement tonight after the Senate passed the Heroes Earning Assistance and Tax Relief Act (HEART Act), which provides permanent tax relief for military families, expands the availability of Recovery Rebates for military families, and expands homeownership opportunities for veterans. The House approved the bill earlier this week; today's action means the bill will go the President's desk for his signature into law.

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement this afternoon after the Senate voted overwhelmingly to override President Bush's veto of the bipartisan Farm Bill, one day after the House voted to override the veto.

"With overwhelming bipartisan votes, the House and Senate have both overridden President Bush's ill-advised veto of a Farm Bill that will reduce food costs, invest in energy independence to reduce gas prices, and reform our farm support system.
