Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement commemorating Veterans Day:

“Each Veterans Day, Americans devote special time to honor the courage and selfless sacrifice of the men and women who serve our nation in uniform.  Since our nation’s Founding, our indomitable soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, National Guardsmen and Reservists have stood strong against tyranny and oppression to advance the blessings of liberty for generations of Americans and people across the globe.

“The House has worked tirelessly to honor our sacred responsibility to our 22 million veterans, their families and their caregivers.  We have proudly passed legislation to end the shameful Widows and Kiddie Tax, reduce veteran suicide, homelessness and sexual assault, ensure quality health care, expand the landmark GI Bill, and secure equality for women, minority and Native American veterans.  We applaud the Senate’s passage of the Veterans’ COMPACT Act, Chairman Mark Takano’s critical legislation to prevent veteran suicide.

“As our nation confronts the accelerating coronavirus crisis, which has infected tens of thousands of veterans and VA workers and killed thousands, it is imperative that we secure even more funding to support VA and care for our veterans and their families throughout this challenging and unprecedented time.  We must meet our veterans’ expectations in every area.  As we advance economic stimulus, we must recognize the role that veterans’ small businesses play and remember that many of our veterans rely on Medicaid, food stamps and housing assistance.

“Our veterans deserve more than the appreciation of a grateful nation.  They have protected and built our country, and they deserve our tireless commitment to advancing their opportunity.  We must build a brighter future worthy of their sacrifice and that of their families.  On this Veterans Day, and every day, we reaffirm our fundamental promise: that just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they come home.”
