Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in commemoration of Veterans Day:
“Each Veterans Day, Americans take time to reflect on and honor the bravery and sacrifice of our heroic men and women in uniform.  For generations, our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, National Guardsmen and Reservists have stood for freedom and democracy wherever the call to serve has brought them.  From the trenches of France 100 years ago to the deserts and mountains of Iraq and Afghanistan today, the sacrifice of America’s servicemembers has safeguarded our democracy and defended our most cherished values.  And even in civilian life, our veterans continue to find ways to serve – as we see with the veterans among our firefighters and first responders battling the wildfires in California and helping communities evacuate.
“We have made great progress for our nation’s 22 million veterans, but our work is not done.  We must remember that our commitment goes beyond one day a year, and renew our pledge to honor and listen to those who don the uniform and ensure their sacrifice is met with meaningful, lasting action.  We honor their contributions to our nation by guaranteeing their economic opportunity and financial security.  And we recognize their visible and invisible wounds of war by expanding access to quality health care and the benefits they deserve.
“Democrats are ready to take that action.  Whether addressing VA’s looming budget crisis, expanding access for women veterans, ensuring vigorous oversight on benefit delivery or protecting VA’s employees, Democrats will fight to bolster the four walls of the VA.  On this Veterans Day, and every day, Democrats uphold our bedrock promise that just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind when they return home.”
