Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the historic P5+1 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement that rolled back Iran's nuclear program:
"Two years ago, the United States joined our P5+1 allies to conclude the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action: a landmark agreement that has prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and made the American people and our allies safer. Thanks to the leadership of President Obama and the tireless work of scientists, diplomats, military leaders and other heads of state from all over the globe, the imminent and catastrophic threat of a nuclear-armed Iran was taken off the table – all without a shot fired.
"This agreement is based on proof, not trust, and America will remain vigilant against any possible violation. Our nation harbors no illusions about the Iranian regime, and Democrats are committed to ensuring Iran will be held accountable for its continued support for terrorism and its many human rights violations.
"The JCPOA is a powerful testament to the power of American diplomacy and leadership in the world. Yet, Trump Administration continues to show a shocking lack of regard for the vital role that America plays in the world – from pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord to bullying and insulting our NATO allies to cozying up to dictators like Putin. Six months into this Administration, serious global leadership from the White House is long past due."
