Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions rolled back a federal government policy protecting transgender people from workplace discrimination under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act:

“The Trump Administration’s decision to rip away workplace discrimination protections for transgender Americans is a shocking, disgusting reminder of this White House’s contempt for the rights of LGBT Americans.  From banning transgender servicemembers to dismantling protections for transgender students, this Administration has consistently and cruelly put prejudice and bigotry before the civil rights of the American people.

“The Trump Administration would do well to remember that the civil rights of the American people are rooted in our ideals and enshrined in our Constitution, and are not contingent on the bigoted beliefs of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.  We expect the courts will continue to recognize this truth, and disregard this hateful decision.
“Every person has the right to be safe at the workplace and in every place – and to be safe from discrimination and bigotry from their own government.  That’s why Congress must pass the Equality Act to protect all members of the LGBT community.  While the White House constantly tries to violate the civil rights of Americans, Democrats will fight with all our strength to defend the rights of all.”
