Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Trump Administration overturned precedent to raise virtually insurmountable hurdles for domestic violence victims to seek asylum in the United States after fleeing countries that do not protect women from violence:

“The Trump Administration’s inhumanity and heartlessness know no bounds.  Republicans in the White House have just condemned countless vulnerable, innocent women to a lifetime of violence and even death, just to score political points with their base.  This act of staggering cruelty insults our nation’s values and our proud history as a land of hope and freedom for those fleeing pain and persecution at home.

“House Democrats call on the Trump Administration to immediately rescind this decision, and call on Congressional Republicans to finally demonstrate the courage to denounce the White House’s staggeringly inhumane actions.  Republicans must join us to reverse this monumental act of cruelty and protect women and families fleeing lethal violence and abuse.  Every woman, everywhere deserves the right to live free from abuse.”
