San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Senate passed the bipartisan budget agreement by a vote of 64-36:
“Today’s bipartisan vote in the Senate marks a step forward in the effort to lift the sequester and prevent future Republican-manufactured crises that cost jobs, threaten our economic growth, and weaken the middle class.
“As this agreement becomes law, we know that our work is far from finished. Even with greater certainty in our nation’s budget, too many Americans still face uncertainty in their families’ budgets after congressional Republicans refused to extend unemployment insurance. In the heart of the holiday season, that means insecurity and instability for 1.3 million people who worked hard, played by the rules, and lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
“Economists and experts have demonstrated how unemployment insurance injects demand into our markets, how every dollar invested in UI expands the economy by $1.52, and how extending this vital lifeline could produce as many as 300,000 jobs. Now that the budget is set and the New Year is set to begin, we must act without further delay to extend unemployment investments that strengthen our families and our economy.”
