Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement as the Supreme Court begins to hear oral arguments in the case of Janus v. AFSCME Council 31:

"America's working men and women are the backbone of our country and the foundation of our strength. We must always remember that America's middle class has a union label on it, benefiting hard-working families across the country and around the world.

"Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration continue to dismantle key reforms and protections for working Americans. This court case is yet another dangerous attempt by powerful special interests to weaken unions and set back progress for workers. The oral arguments heard today will make clear that the right for workers to join together in unions improves the lives of all Americans by raising wages, expanding health care benefits, improving communities and protecting the right to a secure and dignified retirement.

"We should be working to empower unions and build an economy that works for all Americans. The Supreme Court must once again affirm the right of working men and women to join together to build a future of opportunity and prosperity for themselves, their families and all Americans."
