San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in celebration of LGBT Pride Month, which begins Sunday:

"As we mark LGBT Pride Month, we celebrate the progress we've made in the fight for equality and renew our commitment to upholding America's most treasured of values: that all men and women are endowed with the unalienable right to pursue happiness, no matter what they look like or who they love.

"This month is an opportunity for Americans to take stock of our successes in the fight to end discrimination and defend justice – from Congress to the Supreme Court, from state legislatures to local courthouses to ballot boxes nationwide. It is a chance to cherish advancements once thought out of reach: a record number of LGBT Members serving in Congress; Proposition 8, the Defense of Marriage Act and ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' tossed into the dustbin of history; a fully-inclusive hate crimes law; marriage equality in state after state.

"Even with these achievements, our work is far from finished. We must not rest in Congress until we enact the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and halt workplace discrimination in our businesses and across our country. We must be vigilant in combatting the forces of bigotry and bullying at home along with hateful anti-LGBT measures in Uganda and elsewhere around the world.

"This LGBT Pride Month, let us build on our past progress to advance a brighter future, always remembering that the arc of history does indeed bend towards justice – but it will not bend on its own."
