Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of the 87th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s birthday:

“Cesar Chavez dedicated his life, his livelihood, his spirit, and his visionary leadership to the cause of fairness for workers and equality for all.  He led a movement of farmworkers, ignited a campaign for civil rights, and taught a nation about the true meaning of justice.  He reminded us that his fight was always about people; that non-violence was the best path to progress; that the cause of fair wages and safe working conditions were not a matter for any one community, but for our entire country.

“Today, the lessons gleaned from Cesar Chavez must continue to inspire our work to build on his legacy – for Hispanic Americans and every American.  We must fight to raise the minimum wage and renew unemployment insurance for those struggling to make ends meet.  We must defend voters’ rights.  We must secure our borders, protect our workers, unite families, and provide an earned pathway to citizenship with compassionate, comprehensive immigration reform.

“Over the course of his extraordinary life, Cesar Chavez shined a bright light on despair in California and elsewhere, declaring that, despite the challenges before us, ‘we shall endure.’  In that spirit, on this Cesar Chavez day, let us embrace the promise of hope.  Let us act to close opportunity gaps and advance prosperity for all.  Let us put the American Dream in reach for immigrants, workers, and middle class families across our nation.  As a community and as a people, let us endure.”
